The 2015 European Union Film Festival in China, organized by the Delegation of the European Union to China, is proud to celebrate the 40th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the European Union and China. This special 8th edition will take place across the country, in movie theaters and cultural venues in Beijing, Chengdu, Shenzhen, and Jinan. Over 40 features and shorts from all 28 EU Member States have been selected to showcase the finest in contemporary European cinema.

Films to watch out for include Academy Award-winner Ida (Poland), Cannes’ Un Certain Regard winner White God (Hungary), Academy award-nominated Tangerines (Estonia), Song of the Sea (Ireland), and Ernest and Celestine (Belgium), award-winning crowd-pleaser Cowboys (Croatia), star-studded thriller A Most Wanted Man (Germany), and more. This year’s line-up ranges from the 2015 Cannes Film Festival Palme d’Or winner Dheepan (France) and instant crowd-funded hit Kung Fury (Sweden) to Wim Wenders’s beloved classic Wings of Desire (Germany). From animation to documentary, comedy to drama, a wide array of European films will be screened in celebration of this special year.

Special guests at the festival include the director of White God Kornél Mundruczó coming for the opening, director and star of Kung Fury David Sandberg coming for the closing, and distinguished members of the Chinese film industry present throughout. Visiting filmmakers will be present at various screenings and events, where fellow filmmakers, students, and audiences will have a chance to engage with one another.

Indeed, the 2015 EU Film Festival looks towards creating a certain dialogue. After all, European cinema has demonstrated a constant emphasis on the importance of dialogue. This includes personal conversations between friends, family, and lovers; dialogues between individuals and society; and exchanges between the European nations as well as Europe and the world. In this case, we hope that, through film, a cultural and artistic dialogue can emerge and continue—perhaps first between audience members and filmmakers and then, ultimately, between the EU and China.

The official opening will commence on September 29th, with announcements from the European Union Ambassador and special guests. Thereafter, films will be screened at Broadway MOMA in Beijing (Sept 29-Oct 11), Broadway and Stellar Cinemas in Chengdu (Oct 14-21), Broadway Cinemas in Shenzhen (Oct 25-30), and Broadway Cinemas in Jinan (Nov 2-6).

Cultural center screenings in Beijing will take place throughout the month of October at the Institut Français (Oct 12-16), Embassy of Estonia (18-20), Cervantes Institute (21-24), Hungarian Cultural Institute (25), Italian Cultural Institute (27-29), and Embassy of Poland (30-31). For those unable to make the screenings in Beijing, a selection of films will be viewable as part of the EU Online Film Festival, organized in cooperation with iQiyi.

The EU Film Festival is also brought to you by the generous support of its partners, including the Institut Français, Saatchi Artists Cultural Exchange Center (盛世纪元), DDDream Distribution, Sohu Culture, Broadway Cinemas, Gewara, iQiyi, 1905.com, Jiemian.com, Xining FIRST Film Festival, East Hotel, The World and China, and EU Member State Embassies in Beijing.
